The Yoshino Waterfall
The Manufacture in Le Sentier is paying a new tribute to the famous Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai with two miniatures in Grand Feu enamel painted on the backs of two Reverso Tribute Enamel watches. The first depicts The Ono Waterfall and the second The Yoshino Waterfall, two famous paintings by the great 19th century master. Produced in twin ten-piece editions, these two creations illustrate the expertise of the Maison’s artisans.
The miniature paintings on the casebacks were created using the Geneva technique, which involves at least 14 layers of enamel, each fired at 800 degrees Celsius before the next layer is applied – all entailing a total of 80 hours of painstaking work. The enamellers have succeeded in reproducing every detail with extreme accuracy, including the cartouches at the top of each painting.
The finesse and meticulous care devoted to the details contrast with the discretion of the front dials. Yet behind this apparent sobriety lies all the complexity of the hand-crafted guilloché work. The barleycorn pattern was chosen for The Ono Waterfall, while the guilloché workers adorned The Yoshino Waterfall with a lozenge pattern. Once this stage was complete, four to five layers of translucent green enamel were applied, fired and dried individually on the dials, giving them a perfect finish.
