Concerned about plastic pollution of the seas, the watch brand based in the Franches-Montagnes teamed up with specialist company #tide in March 2022 to embark on a spectacular operation: manufacturing watches and packaging from recovered plastic. The timepieces feature the characteristics of the Aikon urban line and come in a range of bright colours.
Maurice Lacroix had pledged to recover 10 million bottles over three years. Buoyed by the success of its initiative – seven million bottles have already been recovered in Thailand in the space of a year and a half – the watch company is going to continue its commitment. In addition to its plastic collection activities, which employ 80 people, it will continue to finance the purchase of long-tail boats, warehouses and equipment, as well as educational programmes in schools to raise children’s awareness of the importance of recycling and preserving the marine environment. To date, some 550 children from 13 schools have taken part in themed workshops.
In addition to its current projects, Maurice Lacroix will be building new warehouses and a quay in Ranong to enable boats to unload waste more safely and efficiently. The company is also going to open other collection points and has other ideas to put into practice, in collaboration with #tide. These include a pilot project to transform certain non-recyclable plastics, such as polystyrene, into ecobricks.
