Under the impetus of Guillaume Laidet, the manufacturer of the famous Cricket alarm watch is reborn, with Vulcain now presenting this legendary model revisited by seconde/seconde/, in partnership with the watch magazine Revolution. This new edition is a nod to a pop-culture classic: Star Trek. As seconde/seconde/ explains: “When I hear the name Vulcain, what I hear is “the Vulcan”, the race of superior beings guided by pure logic in the Star Trek movie.” Spock is actually famously half-Vulcan and half-human, though he has always identified as Vulcan.
seconde/seconde/’s idea was to create a seconds hand that featured “Vulcan salute”. This symbolic hand gesture has become part of popular culture and is appreciated by many enthusiasts. The origin of this gesture dates back to 1967, in an episode called Amok Time, where Leonard Nimoy, who played Spock, made the gesture with his four fingers separated into two pairs, forming a V, accompanied by the now legendary words “Live long and prosper”.
To take the collaboration a step further, seconde/seconde/ designed the “Vulcan” hands in the four colours of the Star Trek uniform: red, blue, gold and green. For the dial, he chose the black Tradition model with applied hour-markers. To provide more variety, the green and gold interpretations come in a 36mm diameter, with the red and blue in 39 mm. Only 25 of each reference will be available. Finally, to bring even more panache to the wrist, each watch is delivered with a second strap in a colour matching the Vulcan salute.
