Since its creation in 2015, sapphire producer Timsaph has focused its strategy on sustainability, proximity and secure supplies. At a time when the sapphire industry is facing debate with regards to provenance and carbon footprint issues, the Jura-based company is proud to offer 100% Swiss sapphire of the highest quality.
No academic frame of reference exists for the Verneuil method of production. In seeking to move beyond the stage of mere empirical experimentation, Timsaph had the opportunity to work with Innosuisse. The company is now able to model the Verneuil process, with simulation possibilities enabling continuous improvement. Thanks to extremely precise gas injection control and automation, the machines have become more reliable. The results can be seen in the positive development of the shape and quality of the single large sapphire crystal referred to as a boule.
The firm is however continuing its research with the aim of further improving its testing procedures so as to better detect internal defects. It also aims to be able to offer coloured sapphire. Finally, keenly aware of the need to act in the face of environmental challenges, the firm is focusing on a short-term project for a manufacturing process that will greatly reduce sapphire’s carbon footprint.
The watch industry thus has an offer enabling it to secure its supply chain with 100% Swiss made quality sapphire. It can fundamentally and rapidly improve its environmental impact.
