For its second collaboration with Warner Bros, Kross Studio is celebrating the release of the film Space Jam: A New Legacy, which hit the screens in July, with the launch of an original Collector Set, inspired by a cult memory brimming with emotions and sweet nostalgia.
With the aim of paying a transversal tribute to pop culture and basketball, the Vaud-based company has created this set featuring an exclusive design. It comprises a watch with a central tourbillon as well as a functional sculpture – both developed in-house – subtly blending the colourful Looney Tunes world with that of art and watchmaking.
Basketball is one of the most popular professional sports in which agility, skill and technical excellence are demanded of athletes in order to give of their best on the court. These values are familiar to the Kross Studio team, which is also honouring the spirit of the sport, its precision and its timeless style.
Every detail of the watch invites you to get up and be ready to slam at any time, just like the hours hand which turns into a free throw lane or “key” – a marked area on a basketball court surrounding the basket – filled with white blue-emission Super-LumiNova. The hours and minutes are also displayed in a unique way, with the hands affixed to a peripheral display mechanism performing a 360° orbit around the tourbillon.
These models are powered by mechanical hand-wound Calibre KS 7,000, equipped with an oversized barrel and boasting a five-day power reserve. The regulator is centrally located in a tourbillon cage at the top of the barrel. The entirely openworked dial offers an in-depth view of the details enhancing the components, such as the wheels, which have been skeletonised to resemble basketballs. The central tourbillon cage dominates the piece, covered with a structure picking up the lines of a basketball.
The Tunes Squad enters the stage engraved on the fixed hours wheel, and each character of the “Dream Team” appears ready for action, from Bugs Bunny, Lola Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Tweety to Sylvester, Marvin the Martian, Yosemite Sam, Granny, Taz, Speedy Gonzales, Elmer Fudd to Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner.
The Space Jam Collector Set is complemented by a functional piece of art. Conceived and designed by Kross Studio, this sculpture takes the form of a basketball thanks to an airy superposition of 11 wooden discs, each representing a ball. The set is attached to a central aluminium column. The B-Ball opens vertically thanks to an ingenious sliding system and reveals a space at its heart designed to accommodate the Space Jam Tourbillon watch. The pumped-up Tunes team is already present on the base of the sculpture, waiting for the game to begin.
