The 20 years of the Breitling Orbiter 3

The watchmaker is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the first non-stop round-the-world balloon flight.

It was indeed on March 21st 1999 that aeronauts Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones gently landed their Breitling Orbiter 3 Rozier balloon in a remote region of the Egyptian desert, achieving a feat that many had deemed impossible.

The round-the-world balloon trip was considered the last great adventure of the 20th century. In all, ten teams of renowned people had made
21 attempts to accomplish this dangerous mission. Bertrand Piccard himself had failed twice in 1997 and 1998 before having a third try, accompanied by Brian Jones. The two adventurers, equipped with a Breitling Emergency on their wrist, managed to land in the Egyptian desert on March 21st 1999, after covering 45,755 kilometres in 19 days, 21 hours and 55 minutes. They had completed the longest flight in aviation history, in terms of both time and distance.

To celebrate this event, Breitling has unveiled the Cockpit B50 Orbiter Edition watch, a timepiece designed for extreme adventures. This titanium model is equipped with multiple functions and details firmly geared to the aeronautical world.
