Important seizure in Hong Kong

Last August, in the context of its activities to prevent counterfeiting in Hong Kong, the FH gave its assistance to the local customs authorities when counterfeit products were confiscated in the Mongkok district.

Organised at the Ladies’ Market, a one kilometre long shopping street, the purpose of this operation was to trace stands on which such items as counterfeit Swiss watches were on display.

The counterfeit products were hidden in backrooms inside a building to which visitors are generally attracted by the vendors on the strength of photos. Pretending to be simple tourists, a team of investigators arranged to be deliberately led into one of these showrooms. Through their presence in the vicinity of these stands, the police officers were therefore able to identify the location of these backrooms.

The confiscation operation as such took place a few days later. Four customs teams simultaneously raided the locations that had been identified previously. Outcome: three persons were arrested, 2,600 counterfeit items seized (total value 2.5 million Hong Kong dollars), including watches and leather goods. Witness statements were also taken with a view to a forthcoming trial.
