«Watch This! Montres genevoises à Bâle»

On 11 March, the Basel Museum of History inaugurated «Watch This! Montres genevoises à Bâle». Today, together with La Chaux-de-Fonds, Geneva and Winterthur, Basel can boast one of the most important watch collections in Switzerland.

Timepieces in all shapes and sizes include table clocks, wall clocks, sundials, pocket watches and pendant watches, and of course the ever-popular wristwatch, as well as much lesser known «montres de carrosse».

This special exhibition lays emphasis on watches from Geneva and presents timepieces in a new context, bridging the gap between past and present. It recounts the beginnings of the history of watchmaking in the field of small watches. It looks in particular at the emergence and development of watchmaking in Geneva and focuses on objects and their characteristics, as well as current phenomena linking historical watches from Geneva with the watch industry of Switzerland today.

Oris, whose founders Paul Cattin and Georges Christian were originally from Le Locle, is the official partner and sponsor of this event which is open to the public until 28 August.
