As part of its Hublot Loves Football campaign, the brand, with Pelé, inaugurated a football pitch in the heart of the Jacarezinho favela in Rio de Janeiro on 27 June this year.
As official timekeeper and watch of the FIFA World Cup, Hublot wished to make a gesture of solidarity that would directly benefit Brazilians and the city of Rio de Janeiro in particular. The idea was first mooted a year ago: a project for children which could also be of service to the community as a whole. It was seen as a way of contributing while at the same time assuring the link with football, the reason for Hublot’s presence in Rio at the World Cup.
The idea came to fruition with the construction of a children’s football pitch. Following initial contact with the city council and the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Jacarezinho favela was chosen as the site for the project. At the entrance to the favela, there is a space describing everything that’s needed to build such an infrastructure. What’s more, it is situated next to the school.
Children painted the walls. Even the Brazilian artist Romero Britto, who contributed to the Hublot Loves Football campaign by designing the ball used at the World Cup, was on hand to paint a fresco.
