Omega - New Timekeeping Technology

In collaboration with the IOC, representing sports and athletes, Omega has completed work to develop an innovative timekeeping technology. Now used for all speed skating events, it recorded the winning time of the Winter Olympic champion in Sochi.

By means of extraordinarily light and discreet transponders attached to competitors’ legs, the brand can now measure, record and display intermediate times, as well as final positions, during competitions. If a skater’s leg passes underneath the infrared beam projected across the finishing line, the transponders are able to determine the ranking and the time. If there is any doubt, Omega’s Scan'O'Vision photo-finish camera records the scene with a scanning frequency of 2,000 images per second. In the final analysis, it is the results captured by this device that are deemed to be official.

In 1932, the brand was the first company to take on the role of official timekeeper for all events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. This partnership, which has led to more than 80 years of innovative developments in the field of sports timekeeping, saw the brand carry out this task for the 26th time in Sochi.
