For more than ten years, the Cinq Aiguilles model in the Masterpiece mechanical watch collection from Maurice Lacroix has retained its appeal for enthusiasts. The Portuguese magazine Relógios e Joias recently provided further proof of this by placing it top in the 2002 Watch of the Year Award competition, in the 500 to 2,500 euros watch category.
There are many watches that show the hours, minutes and seconds, as well as the date and the day of the week. But the Cinq Aiguilles from Maurice Lacroix (see photo) is a different phenomenon altogether: the date does not appear in the ordinary way as a numerical display in a dial aperture, but is indicated by two additional hands with contrasting shapes. It is this exceptional detail, made possible by the hand-decorated automatic movement housed beneath a silver dial, that gives this remarkable Masterpiece its name.
