Taos unveils Tuxedo and Gala

Founded in Geneva in spring 2024, Taos continues its exploration of artistic crafts by unveiling two new one-of-a-kind creations, designed for formal wear and engaging in a mirror-image dialogue: the elegantly masculine Tuxedo and the flamboyantly gorgeous Gala evoking the splendour of evening gowns.

Inspired by the most understated and universal evening wear – the smoking jacket – the face of the Tuxedo watch hints at the elegance of flowing fabric. On the dial, each line and each pattern evokes the crossing of threads on a loom. The silver-leaf spangles shaped into extremely fine threads, are applied in four successive layers and then coated with up to five layers of translucent grand feu enamel to create a rich woven effect. The latter material reveals the depth of midnight blue, the intensity of black and the glow of the silvery threads. Each firing requires extreme precision, as the slightest displacement of a spangle would ruin the entire effect.

Developped by Swiss movement manufacturer Télôs, the exclusive self-winding Calibre VOP318 with parallel-mounted twin barrel can be admired through the transparent back of the 38mm 18K white gold case. Endowed with a 72-hour power reserve, it is finely decorated with a motif inspired by weaving and quilting that requires more than 150 hours of hand engraving.

With Gala, Taos unites for the first time on a single dial five techniques as precious as they are rare: engraving, grand feu enamel, gemsetting, sculpted mother-of-pearl and featherwork. The result is a world brimming with radiance expressed through rich pink, purple and crimson hues. A wealth of materials dance airily across the 5N rose gold dial base: engraved then hand-painted white mother-of-pearl gadroons curved like a satin bodice; engraved gold ropes entwined with imaginary threads; diamond splinters ablaze with grand feu enamel in shades of purple and amethyst.

Added to this are natural feathers that cut, sculpted and set in gold cavities. This craftsmanship – and notably the featherwork – represents a true feat, as the final thickness of the dial is a mere 1.3mm thick despite the accumulation of materials and techniques.

The watch is also powered by Calibre VOP318. Housed in a 5N red gold case, it creates the illusion of finely engraved flounces, visible through the transparent caseback. Just as with the Tudexo timepiece, the handcrafting required more than 150 hours of work.
