The watchmaker has unveiled the Oris X Bamford Watch Department ProPilot Altimeter “Mission Control”, a 250-piece limited edition propelling the iconic altimeter to new heights.
For the second generation of this extremely functional timepiece, Oris set itself ambitious goals: to go higher, while being lighter and thinner. Its particularly ingenious carbon fibre case was elaborated using an additive manufacturing and moulding process developed by 9T Labs, a spin-off of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. A composite of carbon fibre and a polymer called PEKK, it is as light as plastic and stronger than some metals. It offers high mechanical, thermal and chemical resistance, while remaining light, rigid and strong.
Once calibrated to the local atmospheric pressure via a gauge and a red arrow at 6 o’clock, the watch can measure altitudes of up to 19,700 feet (6,000 metres), displayed on a scale around the dial. The indications are clear, legible and integrated with the time and date functions.
