Beginning in 1999, the history of Formex is characterised by its resolutely contemporary debut notably including the filing of a patent for a case suspension system, followed by the company founding in 2000. Derived from the expression FORMe EXtrême (extreme form), its name reveals a bold and unconventional approach to watchmaking.
In the 16 years since its founding, Formex has forged a remarkable legacy under the leadership of two passionately dedicated brothers, Hans-Peter and Ferdinand Grädel. Driven by a deep fascination for motor sport and high performance, they developed nearly 20 models that defined the brand’s identity in its early days. However, in the mid-2010s, the company ran out of steam and as the Grädel brothers were nearing retirement age, the future of the brand became uncertain.
In 2016, Hans-Peter Grädel met Raphael Granito, who had already made a name for himself at Dexel, a family business specialising in the production of precision components. Together, they shared their passion for watchmaking. From one independent family business to another, from one watchmaking sector to another, Raphael Granito built the bridge linking Formex to its present and above all to its future.
Inspired by the suspension of a racing car, the case suspension system developed and patented by Formex in 1999 protects the mechanical movement while dynamically adapting to the wrist at all times. Four springs placed between the upper and lower parts of the case allow the upper case to move independently at each corner, thus absorbing shocks and sudden movements. This mechanism also adjusts to the natural variations in wrist size caused by changes in temperature and activity throughout the day. In addition to protecting the movement, it offers exceptional comfort that is perceptible to the wearer at all times.
Representing the air, the earth and the sea, Formex timepieces are available in four collections: Essence, the original, which is equipped with a suspended case; Reef, the diver; Field, the adventurer; and Stratos, the airborne traveller.
