Unveiled this autumn, the new Octo Finissimo watch was designed by Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani, Bulgari’s Watches Design Center Senior Director, in collaboration with Laurent Grasso. From case to bracelet, the timepiece is draped in a midnight-blue mantle subtly reflecting the light. A cloud adorning the dial centre lights up this dark sky with a shimmering rainbow efect.
Laurent Grasso says he was inspired by the magic of iridescent clouds, in which suspended particles and frozen water droplets create a form of diffraction revealing several colours. The three hands stand out against this dial backdrop, as if floating in the night.
For some 20 years now, the French artist whose signature appears on the back of the watch has been capturing the invisible, impalpable side of the world through his creations. Keenly interested in science and the cosmos, he accepted the invitation to apply his concept to the world of watchmaking, which is as much about heavenly bodies as it is about mechanics. Laurent Grasso sees each of his creations as a ‘machine’ enabling him to express a poetic vision the world. For him, the cloud as the ultimate symbol of dreams represents a phenomenon halfway between terrestrial and celestial spheres. Screen-printed on the watch dial, it evokes one of the key themes of his creative universe, along with the hands hovering above.
This universe appears in perfect harmony with that of the Octo Finissimo watch that stems from the encounter between two elementary shapes: the circular dial perfectly framed by the octagonal case. Available in a 200-piece limited edition, the Laurent Grasso X Octo Finissimo is equipped with ultra-thin (2.23mm) BVL 138 automatic movement, housed in a 40mm-diameter bead-blasted titanium case.
