Générale Ressorts unveils a lead-free barrel

The Biel/Bienne-based company has just taken a new step forward with the presentation of a complete barrel that is entirely lead-free, fitted with a Bioflex spring that avoids the controversial use of beryllium. By developing this component, Générale Ressorts offers a host of advantages to the watch industry.

Firstly, it enables all-essential compliance with the new European REACH regulations, which will restrict the use of dangerous substances in manufactured products. By eliminating lead from the composition of the barrel, watch manufacturers can guarantee users’ safety while also improving their ecological footprint.

Secondly, this barrel offers greater durability and long-term stability. Lead is notorious for its tendency to oxidise and corrode over time, thereby potentially altering components’ appearance and properties. By replacing it with safer, more durable materials, such as lead-free stainless steel or brass, manufacturers can improve the reliability and longevity of their products.

This innovation stems from a lengthy process that involved a complete overhaul of production processes and new techniques to guarantee components’ quality and performance. Above all, lead-free alloys had to be found that offered mechanical properties comparable to those of traditional materials, while maintaining a high level of precision and quality.
