The Swiss GPHG roadshow

Made of up more than 350 players from the main watchmaking sectors, the international Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) Academy was founded at the start of 2020.

In early September, it nominated for the first time the 84 timepieces that will continue competing to win one of the 18 prizes – including the prestigious “Aiguille d’Or” Grand Prix – which will pay tribute to contemporary watchmaking excellence.

A 30-member jury from the Academy will meet in Geneva behind closed doors in early November to physically evaluate the 84 competing watches. In order to ensure the physical presence of all the jurors in the current public health circumstances, the 2020 jury is composed of Swiss and foreign personalities residing in Switzerland.

Members of the entire Academy will also take part in the second round of voting via the secure digital platform, with the result of the Academy’s vote being added to that of the Jury to determine the final list of awards.

The 2020 edition will be an opportunity for the GPHG traveling exhibition, which is accustomed to tours taking in the world’s big cities, to meet a Swiss audience.

This exceptional roadshow, which presents 84 current watches from 50 brands, opened at the Musée International d’Horlogerie (MIH) in La Chaux-de Fonds from October 15th to 18th. It followed by a stopover at the Bucherer boutique on Zurich’s Bahnhofstrasse from October 20th to 22th and another at the Bellevue Palace in Bern from October 23th to 25th. Finally, in accordance with the annual custom, the 84 nominated timepieces took up residence from October 31st to November 15th in the Geneva Musée d’art et d’histoire (MAH), where the GPHG also offers visitors a chance to take part in “introduction to watchmaking” workshops for which spaces can be booked via the following email address: inscription@gphg.org.

The 2020 list of awards will be announced on November 12th at the 20th GPHG awards ceremony. The event will take place at the Théâtre du Léman in Geneva, in compliance with current health regulations, and will as usual be broadcast live on gphg.org as well as by various media. This year’s presenter Edouard Baer will set the tone for this evening dedicated to the excellence of contemporary watchmaking creations.
