Omega Official Timekeeper of the YOG 2020

Since the creation of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in 2010, Omega has been the Official Timekeeper.

For the sixth time, the watch company followed every second of the feats accomplished by these young athletes who vied with each other from January 9th to 22nd this year.

Lausanne 2020 marked the third edition of the Winter Youth Olympic Games. Around 1,800 young athletes from over 70 nations competed in 81 events around the city of Lausanne, on the shores of Lake Geneva, St. Moritz, Champéry and in the nearby Vaud Alps and the French and Swiss Jura mountains.

This elite sporting event is for young people from all over the world and is distinct from other youth sports events because it also integrates a unique Culture and Education Programme, based around five main themes: Olympism, Social Responsibility, Skills Development, Expression and Well-being and Healthy Lifestyles.

Away from the field of play and through a variety of fun and interactive activities, workshops and team-building exercises, the CEP gives participating athletes the opportunity to learn about the Olympic values, explore other cultures and develop the skills to become true ambassadors of their sport.

At the Lausanne 2020 edition, new disciplines were introduced, such as ski mountaineering, a spectacular event where athletes must climb the mountain on skis and then descend it in the same way. Other sports have been added to the list to reflect new innovations and to achieve gender equality among participants: women’s double luge and Nordic combined. Spectators were also able to watch the first 3-on-3 ice hockey event.

To handle the timing of all these events, Omega transported some 60 tons of equipment, while 150 technicians and watchmaking professionals, accompanied by 100 trained volunteers, were active at the various dedicated venues. Most of the equipment was the same as that used at the Olympic Games.
