Loyal to its core values, the Maison has always been concerned with sustainable development. At Baselworld 2018, Chopard therefore announced that as of July 2018, it will be using 100% ethical gold to produce its jewellery and timepieces.

Before a large audience, company co-presidents Caroline and Karl-Friedrich Scheufele unveiled this vision in the company of friends of the brand including Livia and Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, fashion models and activists Arizona Muse and Noella Coursaris Musunka, as well as the Chinese singer Roy Wang.

Chopard defines “Ethical Gold” as gold acquired from responsible sources, verified as having met international best practice environmental and social standards. From July 2018, Chopard gold will be responsibly sourced from one of two traceable routes: artisanal freshly mined gold from small-scale mines participating in the Swiss Better Gold Association (SBGA), Fairmined and Fairtrade schemes, and Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) Chain of Custody gold, through Chopard’s partnership with RJC-certified refineries.

During the press conference, Chopard also revealed the next objective of its sustainable development program, meaning its official commitment to achieving the United Nations Global Goals for sustainable development. As part of its corporate responsibility, the brand wishes to go beyond merely complying with current norms and instead measure how it can contribute to meeting these ambitious and so very necessary international objectives put in place by the UN.
