Audemars Piguet exhibition in Geneva

Alexandre Joly

At the Ritz-Carlton Hotel de la Paix in Geneva, Audemars Piguet is presenting the new sound installation by artist Alexandre Joly.

Produced by the artist for Audemars Piguet, Twenty-One Simultaneous Spacetimes & A Hundred Simultaneous Spacetimes is an invitation to discover the origins of the Vallée de Joux-based manufacturing company, with which the artist has been cooperating for many years.

Joly’s works explore the world of the senses, the imaginary and the aesthetic as well as ethical relationships that humans have with nature, technology and the environment. Joly mixes audio recordings from natural environments (weather sounds, outdoor atmospheres, insects, frogs, etc.) that he superimposes at electronic frequencies onto industrial sounds to establish sound as a material, a distinct entity, while referring to the physical space it accompanies.

In The Ritz-Carlton Hotel de la Paix installation, Joly has captured audio recordings from the natural environment of the Vallée de Joux as well as those of the manufacturer’s workshops and museum. By bringing together these natural and industrial tones, Joly has created a customised soundtrack with a backlit wall depicting a phantasmagorical interpretation of the Vallée’s forest.
