In memory of the artist HR Giger

On October 19th, Strom Prestige presented the “In Memoriam HR Giger” watch, one of the last projects on which the artist worked before his death in 2014.

An authentic “wrist sculpture”, this timepiece stages HR Giger’s legendary biomechanoid creature. Adulated for his “realistic fantasy” works, the latter notably made a name for himself by creating the monster for Ridley Scott’s film Alien in 1979, for which he won a “Best Visual Effects” Oscar the following year.

Deeply saddened by the passing of the artist who had become a personal friend, Daniel Strom waited three years before presenting the watch he has created with him. The official launch of this timepiece, issued in a 99-piece limited edition, was held in the HR Giger museum in Gruyères and attended by the artist’s widow, Carmen Giger.

Sculpted in the silver case, the elongated skulls of the biomechanoid creature extend from the lugs, while its body parts are etched into the case middle. The hand-crafted dial with its 3D relief is also inspired by another of HR Giger’s works, the “ELP 11” (work no. 217), painted with an airbrush in a single night. For Daniel Strom, the skull in this painting, with its vibrantly sensual mouth, symbolises the fleeting nature of existence – a subject already explored in one of the previous creations of his Agonium collection, of which the “In Memorian HR Giger” is the sixth opus.
