Oris and the scientific expedition to «Clipperton»

The French «Clipperton» archipelago

Dedicated to the struggle to safeguard the oceans, the watch firm was the main sponsor of the scientific expedition to «Clipperton», an uninhabited island in the Pacific.

This mission which began last April involved a team of scientists and ecologists. Lying 1080 km South-West of Mexico and 945 km from the nearest continent, the French «Clipperton» archipelago is one of the most isolated atolls anywhere in the world. Known as the island of passion, it benefits from a unique ecosystem and is located on the migration corridor for many marine species. Despite its isolation, the archipelago is a regular victim of unlawful fishing.

This adventure lasting for two weeks was designed not only to raise public awareness of the ecological cause but also to highlight the vital role of the island in animal migration. One of the practical objectives was to collect important scientific data about sharks so as to safeguard the special ecosystem which exists here. Oris supported the placing of transmitters on these marine animals as well as the processing of the GPS data collected in this way. This information enabled the migratory route of several species of sharks to be discovered. Parallel studies of the human impact and marine debris were also pursued.
