«Marie-Antoinette, a queen in Versailles»

On 29 October, Breguet celebrated the opening in Tokyo of the «Marie-Antoinette, a Queen in Versailles» exhibition which is being held at the Mori Arts Centre Gallery until 26 February 2017.

Organised by the Château de Versailles and supported by the watch manufacturer, this retrospective paints a full picture of the sovereign’s life for the first time ever in Japan.

Marc A. Hayek, Breguet Chairman and CEO, hosted some 120 guests at the Résidence de France in Tokyo for a gala evening celebrating the inauguration of this exhibition. The choice of Japan for this retrospective was not anodyne. This is in fact the country outside France where the figure of Marie-Antoinette is particularly popular. Loyal to its tradition, the brand wished to support this cultural project whose protagonist was one of the most devoted clients in its entire history.

To enable its guests to learn more about the privileged commercial relationship which Breguet enjoyed with Marie-Antoinette, the firm presented a dedicated module taken from its roadshow entitled «Breguet, a history with prominent personages». The extent of the last Queen of France’s influence on the watchmaker’s creations - and more generally on her epoch - is illustrated by Pocket Watch No. 1160. This iconic timepiece is a reproduction of the «Marie-Antoinette No. 160», a timekeeper ordered in 1783 from A. L. Breguet for the Queen and destined to remain for almost a century the most complicated timepiece ever produced. This watch was presented to the public for a few days on the occasion of the exhibition and in the Breguet boutique in Tokyo.
