The Precious Metals Control Office in Geneva

The newly reorganised Precious Metals Control Office in Geneva opened its new premises in the airport’s cargo area on April 3rd. The Geneva federal office, formerly located in the city centre, has thus joined its existing subdivision at the Swiss airport.

The unified office now has an optimal location to provide precious metals companies with a wide range of services relevant to their activities, as well as to carry out its cargo control and market surveillance tasks in a streamlined and efficient manner.

Mainly active in the official hallmarking of watches and jewellery, this organisational unit of the Federal Customs Administration (AFD) is also responsible for controlling the conformity of the composition and marking of precious metal articles in cross-border traffic and on the domestic market, as well as the determination of the gold titre in precious metal alloys. In addition, the Bureau plays an active role in the fight against unfair competition and counterfeiting as well as in maintaining the reputation of Swiss products throughout the world.

The Bureau is now able to carry out analyses on the conformity of the material produced by local companies for the manufacture of watch cases and precious metal articles, and has an organisation and infrastructure in place to meet the demands of the industry located near the airport as well as legal requirements.
