Cuckoo clocks like no other

Martino D'Esposito

Founded in 2013, the Swiss Koo manufacturer, based in the Lausanne region, is passionately dedicated to the creation of wooden cuckoo clocks.

While the pieces are made in a spirit of respect for continuity and tradition, the creators - Alexandre Gaillard and Martino D'Esposito - incorporate an original narrative universe and make use of modern design and production techniques. They have invented the title “Animated horological tableaux” to describe their clocks. Meticulous attention is paid to manufacture; all the pieces are signed individually and the use of noble materials such as wood and brass is a hallmark of this maker. Production of the cases, lathe working of the weights, gold leaf gilding, screen-printing and even bell tuning are entrusted to partner craftsmen, nearly all of whom are established in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. These artisans deploy the quality of their expertise in these exceptional timepieces. Designed to last and built like little chalets, the cuckoo clocks are assembled without using glue or pins and house mechanical movements actuated by weights.

Alexandre Gaillard and Martino D'Esposito are childhood friends. Both industrial designers are 39 years old and have been actively engaged in the design and styling of furniture pieces, accessories, watches etc. After some years in which the stringent criteria and standards of finish placed by them on the brands for which they worked tended to be disappointed, they decided to make and sell their own product: a long-lasting well-made recreational product which lives up to specific criteria defined by them. The Swiss cuckoo clock which had fallen by the wayside for many years now concentrates all these admirable features and quickly turned out to be an ideal object to express their creativity. Small production runs soon saw the light of day.

Still as passionate as they were at the outset, they design one new model each season in order to keep their collection vibrant and attractive. At the request of a major watchmaking group, they have even created a personalised clock which now makes an original gift.
